Multiple instances
I was wondering if I can place Featurific on multiple pages but have each instance display a different set of stories?

RE: Multiple instances
Hi Guest,

You can, but to do so, you'd have to manually manipulate the data.xml files. It's complicated, but to make a long story short:
Featurific itself supports multiple slideshows.
Featurific for Wordpress only supports one slideshow per Wordpress installation.

If you're not afraid of doing some manual work (or doing some custom coding yourself), I can talk you through what would be involved in having several Featurific instances on one Wordpress installation.

Hope this helps! Smile

RE: Multiple instances
Thanks Rich. I will gladly accept you help and I don't mind doing some manual work to get it working for Wordpress. I will contact you about ordering.

RE: Multiple instances
Updated 1/27/10:

A client requested help making the 'dual-instance' Featurific work (more details below), so I made the changes for him. If you would like to use the second instance of Featurific for Wordpress created for him, download the custom plugin (branched from Featurific for Wordpress version 1.6.1) at:

Note that this is alpha (developer-level) code, and is governed by the normal Featurific for Wordpress license (included in license.txt); neither I nor Breeze Computer Consulting makes any warrantee or promises that this plugin will work at all. Chances are it will corrupt data, crash, and die. Back up your data before attempting to use this second-instance plugin.

After installing and activating this plugin, you should have a second instance of Featurific, named 'Featurific2' available to you.

Hi again,

All right. While thinking this over, I realized that there may be a third option that I haven't previously considered. However, it requires you being familiar with PHP code. Here are the steps you could possibly take (untested) to get several instances of Featurific on one Wordpress installation:

1. Copy the entire plugin directory to 'featurific1-for-wordpress', still in the plugins directory.

2. Do a *case sensitive* search and replace within featurific.php, replacing every instance of 'featurific' with 'featurific1'. Then, replace every instance of 'Featurific' with 'Featurific1'. Finally, replace every instance of 'FEATURIFIC' with 'FEATURIFIC1'.

3. Repeat step 2 on the following files:
cached_image.php, data_xml.php, and featurific_db.php

3. In featurific.php (aka featurific1.php), replace every instance of 'get_home_template_of_theme' with 'get_home_template_of_theme2'.

3. Navigate to the featurific1-for-wordpress directory, and rename every file with some form of 'featurific' or 'Featurific' in the filename to be 'featurific1' or 'Featurific1'. For example: 'featurific_db.php' becomes 'featurific1_db.php', 'FeaturificFree.swf' becomes 'Featurific1Free.swf', etc.

4. Activate the plugin.

5. Remove the code that is automatically inserted into home.php or index.php and instead place it on the page that you want to place it on.

I haven't tried this myself yet, so *PLEASE* back up your data and files before you try this. However, this should get you all the way or at least close to a multiple-Featurific installation.

Good luck! Smile
